The Three Hidden TNQ Treasures Competition

1st Prize $1525:          Winner: Valerie Haigh, Tolga QLD
My Hidden TNQ Treasures. On a recent drive around our beautiful part of the Tropical North when the sun broke through for a day during our w I visited the scenic lookout on "Gentle Annie" as it is affectionately known among the locals on the Atherton Tablelands near Millaa Millaa. The view was breathtaking it gives you the sense of peace and quiet of the country and is so relaxing. The endless parade of fluffy clouds made me want to drift off to sleep. After a refreshing picnic lunch at the rustic picnic table provided we headed off to "Mt Hypipamee Crater National Park." Where the short walk to the Crater was amazing with all of the moss and fungi amongst the ancient rainforest trees, it was like something from the Dinosaur era and I half expected to see one pop it's head around one of the giant trees. I was however not dissappointed when something not as old but just as wonderful did come into view. It was a magnificent Cassowary feeding on fruit on the forest floor not far from us. We stared in awe at this beautiful creature before it moved off. The Dinner falls were raging after recent rains so we didn't venture too close even though they did look spectacular. After our excercise in the form of a leisurely walk in Dinosaur country we travelled across the Upper Barron Road and headed to "Gallos Dairyland" where we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea of freshly made scones and fresh cream. We tasted their cheeses and chocolates and ofcourse couldn't resist buying some to take home. Even though it's the "Wet Season" Tropical North Queensland never ceases to leave me with a feeling of pride and happiness.

2nd Prize $1200:          Winner: Suella Coburn, Trinity Beach QLD
Lake Tinnaroo has some lovely spots where we haved camped and water-skied. The stillness, tranquility, sunrises and sunsets are unforgetable.I once saw a rainbow above the hills ending in the water,a spectacular sight. For me Cairns Botanical Gardens  is a cool respite on a hot day,a place to get  away with the family. The kids love discovering the plants, frogs, lizards and bugs along the many paths;especially rolling down the grassy bank. The Boardwalk and Lakes opposit the gardens is also a favourite picnic spot for me. It's a great meeting place for family and friends,a gathering spot for a special event. With a variety of birdlife, the occasional  goanna and  the profusion of water lilies this is such  a relaxing place  Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine are both wonderful swimming spots during humid hot days.I pack a picnic and for a treat its a must to demolish some scones at the tea house watching the resident boat do a tour of the lake. I enjoy a walk around the lakes glimpsing the variety of birdlife, fish and the turtles. I have to mention Crystal Cascades ,Mossman Gorge,Babinda Boulders and Josephine Falls as some of my other special get away escapes. I will never forget eating my first mango it was at Milla Milla Falls, the juice was running from my mouth ,down my arms covering my upper torso with a sticky sweet substance;which was washed off in a dip of the cool water of the falls. There are so many places to choose from and I  have, not even got to my favourite island or reef yet! I quite often find myself reminiscing about my favourite hidden TNQ treasures. They are my meditation spaces.
